it is doubtful that Apple would make up its mind on using the same person's name “iPhone 5g” on a 4G iPhone alternative.

Toshiba is thinking big for tablets

In the AT330, Toshiba has created one of the largest tablets on the market. Its screen measures 13.3 inches (33.7cm), dwarfing the Apple iPad and delivering something that looks like a thin TV.
This tablet is so big, users are advised to set it down and use two hands to reach both sides of the screen. Thankfully, this arrangement is often handy and a smart way to avoid pulling out a laptop computer.
The AT330's size is clearly its defining feature, but Toshiba is not relying on its size alone to win an audience. This tablet is well made, with an attractive, textured metal rear, a slender but solid 9.8mm form and plenty of connections.
Around its perimeter, users will find two speakers, a screen lock switch, space for a full-size SD memory card, and both HDMI and Micro USB ports to connect other gadgets.
It's more than most slate computers offer and adds flexibility to this tablet.
The ability to slip a still-warm SD card into the side of this tablet, to show off fresh photos, is handy, though there are also built-in cameras front and back.
This tablet is also no slouch in the power department. It uses a 1.4GHz quad-core Nvidia Tegra chip, 1GB RAM and Google's fresh Android Ice Cream Sandwich software to deliver apps speedily.
Even so, it's the massive HD+ screen that makes the biggest impact on its use. The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio - the same as a widescreen TV - and this makes for comfortable TV and movie viewing.
It's handy in other applications too. There is plenty of room to scan your email list on the AT330's screen, and it's easy to file Gmail into folders when you can select emails with your left hand and their destinations with your right. Similarly, this screen delivers plenty of room for touching up images, reading books, inspecting your calendar, and having several widgets stretch across one homescreen.
Naturally, the keyboard on this tablet is also as large as a regular desktop model, making typing significantly easier.
Having such a large tablet has its downsides too. This computer weighs 1kg - fine for a backpack but too much for a handbag. It also features just 16GB of storage, 12GB of which are available for use, and a proprietary battery charger rather than the more common Micro USB.
Tablet computers don't come much bigger or as easy on the eye. Users looking for a desktop replacement should appreciate its big, bold display

8 Windows 8 tips and tricks for new users

win 8 tips tricks windows 8
Are you struggling to learn Windows 8? These eight top tips will help you grasp Microsoft's new OS quickly.
Windows 8 includes many new features which give users the opportunity to use Windows in different ways. A new interface, and new ways to interact with your computer, as well as new shortcuts, new menus and an entirely new class of apps, are all waiting within the new OS. All of these features can be useful, that is, if you know how to use them. Learning these tricks is easier and more useful if you actually try them out, so grab your Windows 8 device and give it a go as we dive in and take a look at eight new tricks for Windows 8.

Search by category

Windows 7 included a search feature that was handy, but Windows 8 ups the ante by providing even better search functionality via the Windows 8 UI. It’s now possible to filter your search by apps, settings, or files. You can access the search function from any screen by placing your cursor in the upper right hand corner of your display. This will activate the “Charms” bar, which includes a magnifying glass for search. The result is familiar. Select a category and type in what you’re looking for.
It’s also possible to access search using hotkeys. Win + F will take you to Files, Win + W will take you to Settings, and Win + Q will take you to Apps.

Manipulate the Start screen

Windows populates the new user interface with tiles automatically, but, since every user is different, it may not pick the best apps for you. However, it is possible to un-pin and re-size tiles just by right-clicking on them. Want to modify multiple tiles? Simply right-click on them in succession to do so. Tiles can also be moved using the good ol’ drag-and-drop technique.
You’ll also notice that the tiles are placed in groups. To modify them, click on the minimize button in the lower right-hand corner (it’s very small, next to the scroll bar), and then right-click groups to add names or delete them.
What about pinning all-new apps or functons? For that, go to the Apps search page and find what you want to add to the Start menu. Right-click and then click Pin to Start. This only works for apps — not settings or files.

Tab through Windows 8 apps only

Alt + Tab is a classic shortcut for moving through different app windows quickly. Now it is being joined by a new hotkey: Win + Tab. Pressing these two together will bring up a new interface on the left-hand side of the screen that lets you move only through Windows 8 apps. It’s a nice way of multi-tasking when you are not in the classic desktop environment.

Gain context and snap windows

The top of a new Windows 8 app is an important part of the app interface. Once inside the app, placing the mouse cursor on the top of the screen will turn the cursor into a hand. Once that’s happened, you can right-click to open up a context menu that will provide a few useful options. It’s usually not much, but the specifics depend on the app.
Doing this also lets you use the new snap features in the Windows 8 interface. To activate this, left-click and drag downwards, and the window will shrink. Now, drag the window to the right or left and watch it automatically snap to that portion of the screen. You can use this to watch information in one Windows 8 app while primarily using another. This will continue to function in the desktop if you go to it after snapping a Windows 8 app to the left or right side of the screen.

Access settings quickly

Underneath the new interface, all of the old Windows 7 utilities are — for the most part — still there. That being said, you may not need to access them often due to a new PC settings interface. You can access setting by searching for “PC settings” or by pressing Win + I and the clicking the Change PC Settings link at the bottom. This new interface will let you handle basic settings pertaining to network connectivity, privacy, and currently-connected devices, among other things. This is often the fastest way to change basic settings.
That same Win + I menu can also be used to power off your computer or change screen brightness without having to open the Change PC Settings link.

Learn Ribbon and the Quick Access toolbar

Windows 8′s other big interface change is the addition of the Ribbon to Internet Explorer. The icon-driven UI replaces the text-menu interface of  the old version. However, it only sometimes appears by default. To summon it, you need to use the new option tabs at the top of Explorer (Home, Share, View, etc.). You also an click the tack icon at the upper right or you can use the Ctrl + F1 hotkey.
When Ribbon is not active you will see the slimmer Quick Access toolbar. It has only a few fuctions by default, but users can add more. To do this, open the Ribbon, right-click on an icon, and then click “add to Quick Access toolbar.”

Get to know your history

One of the best feature in Windows 8 is File History. It’s an automatic update service that  can back up information to a second drive and also lets you selectively restore data. First, however, you have to open and access it. To do this, search for File history in the  settings search. Open it, and then click the Turn On button. File History handles the rest.
If the drive you want to back up to is not selected you can change drives by clicking the “Select a drive” link on the left. You also can restore files by clicking the “Restore personal files” link.

Access system functions with an old-fashioned hotkey

Though Windows 8 tosses out the old Start button, it does add another menu that can be of use. The menu doesn’t have a particular name, but it’s accessed using the Win + X hotkey and it appears where Start used to be (the lower left hand side).
From this menu it’s possible to access a number of utilities like Control Panel, Task Manager, and the Device Manager. It’s an old-fashioned menu that uses a gray background with black text but it will appear in either the desktop environment or the new Windows 8 UI.

Samsung Galaxy Express steams into your local AT&T store, where it’s yours for $100

AT&T has provided more details about the Samsung Galaxy Express, set to be released onto the network next week. Aimed at first-time smartphone owners, it has 4G LTE connectivity and a sensible price tag.
Previously announced in September, AT&T has now provided some more details about the Samsung Galaxy Express, it’s latest mid-range Android smartphone. The network is pushing the Galaxy Express as being suitable for first-time smartphone owners, or those who’re planning to upgrade from a basic device.
It’s making it an attractive proposition too, as it has slapped a $100 price tag on the front, provided you scrawl your signature on the bottom of a two-year contract. For that, you’ll get a curvy, Galaxy Ace 2-alike device that will happily connect to AT&T’s 4G LTE network.
The specification, while not quite up to the standard of the current crop of superphones, is still intriguing, particularly the screen. It measures 4.5-inches, a fairly unusual size, and one that’s shared by devices such as the Nokia Lumia 920, the Motorola Atrix HD and the Huawei Honor 2. It’s a Super AMOLED Plus panel too, meaning it’s the same as that seen on the Galaxy S2, and not the often unfairly maligned PenTile display used on the Galaxy S3.
Inside is a 1.5GHz, dual-core processor of currently unknown parentage, which should see the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system perform well. There’s no information on the amount of RAM, nor any clues on how much internal memory will be found inside the Galaxy Express, although a microSD card slot is present.
A 5-megapixel camera sits on the real panel, and other features include GPS, Bluetooth and a 2,000mAh battery.

Google launches final version of Chrome Remote Desktop

Detailed on the official Google Chrome Blog, the development team behind Chrome has pushed Chrome Remote Desktop out of beta and the extension is now available for download on the Chrome Web Store. Ideal for remote computer access between families, the Chrome extension allows a user to remotely access a computer at another location. For example, a tech savvy college student living on campus will be able to connect to their parent’s computer to provide troubleshooting support without having to travel back home. Small businesses could also utilize the free extension in order to provide IT support to employees.
Chrome Remote DesktopGoogle has been testing the extension in beta format over the last twelve months and the launch of the public version brings a couple new features into the mix. Chrome Remote Desktop users can now use a real time audio feed to listen to music stored on a computer in another location. This feature could be ideal for accessing music on a significant other’s home computer while away on a business trip.
The development team has also added the ability to transfer files between the remote and local computer. Rather than downloading a spyware removal tool to a computer through remote access, a user could simply transfer the installation file to the remote computer.
After installing the extension on both the local and remote computers, the user of the remote computer chooses to share their desktop by generating a unique 12-digit access code and providing that number to the other party. The other user enters the access code and the connection is created between the two computers. Regarding future additions to the extension, Google product manager Stephen Konig stated “We have more features in the works that will make Chrome Remote Desktop even more powerful.” Chrome Remote Desktop can also be useful to anyone utilizing a Chromebook in order to access content on a more powerful laptop sitting at work or home.

Galaxy Camera coming for the holidays, available November 16 on AT&T

The Samsung Galaxy Camera will be available to snap pictures during the holiday season. The 4G-connected camera will be available through AT&T starting November 16. Running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and featuring a 21x optical zoom, the camera will cost $500 before the data plan.
Some people can’t connect to a 4G network on their phones yet, but AT&T is carrying a camera that can. Starting November 16, the Samsung Galaxy Camera will be available at AT&T for $500. There is no data plan attached to that price, as all data plan options are available separately.
If you usually fret over the quality of the 8-megapixel camera in your phone, the Samsung Galaxy Camera will probably make you forget about snapping pictures with your handset. It features a 21x optical zoom lens and a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor. Every snapshot you take can be viewed on the 4.8-inch HD Super Clear LCD display, so every flaw … er, detail will be clearly visible.
Of course, the thing that sets the Samsung Galaxy Camera apart from most cameras is the connectivity factor. The device operates on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and is capable of connecting to the web via 4G, giving it the ability to share photos off the camera right after being taken. Friends of photographers or snap-happy people, consider this your warning. The camera can also access the Google Play store, creating a unique opportunity to download apps, because you need another device to play Angry Birds on.
All of those fun features come at an extra cost. While the camera itself carries a price tag of $500, the additional data plan required to make use of this device’s full potential will add a monthly bill as well. To have a data plan, you’ll also need a smartphone on AT&T’s network. If you don’t meet that requirement, has you covered: Buy a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and get $100 off a second Samsung device like, say, a camera. Once you have a smartphone and your Samsung Galaxy Camera on the AT&T network, you can finally look forward to buying that plan of between 1GB and 20GB of shared data. AT&T will also spot you 5GB of free storage in its AT&T Locker service.

Nokia X7 review

The Nokia X7 ought to be a flagship smartphone – it has a vast screen, it runs a revamped touchscreen OS and it looks rather nice too.
OK, it isn't 3D capable like the LG Optimus 3D or the upcoming HTC Evo 3D, but it has an 8MP camera, super video playback and, at first glance, plenty of storage capacity.
The Nokia X7 runs Symbian Anna, a revamped version of Symbian ^3. Now, as Nokia is about to get all warm and cosy with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 Mango, do we care that ^3 may have been improved from the rather disappointing baseline it set in handsets including the Nokia N8 and E7?
Well yes, we do actually. The X7 is in the wild, and it's only fair that we are interested in how well it performs.
We've nabbed a spot of video with the X7, so see how it fares in real-life use:
The X7 isn't a low-cost or budget handset by any measure of means. Our review sample came from Three, where it costs £380 on Pay As You Go and from £30 per month on contracts as we write, so it'll set you back a pretty penny. For that money you will expect a premium product.
Base specs are good. There's an 8MP camera, 8GB of storage courtesy of a microSD card (expandable to 32GB), GPS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA to kick things off.
And you get a fair slice of quality in the looks department too. The chassis has a rather pleasing design, with angled corners that look as though they house speakers in the sides. Well, two of them do. The other two? Well they're present for symmetry's sake, we suppose.
Nokia x7
The top and bottom edges are flat as is usual for a handset, and the top edge houses the on/off switch, a 3.5mm headset connector and microUSB port.
The long edges are more curved and are made from metal that wraps round into the backplate. This is one of the factors that helps the Nokia X7 weigh a somewhat heavy 146g. While stylistically it looks good, the backplate does lead to a couple of shortcomings.
Nokia x7
First off, you can't get at the battery, which is locked away behind that backplate. More important from an everyday perspective, the side buttons are tricky to access because they're set on a curve that runs away from your fingers.
The volume rocker on the right is slightly more difficult than usual to rock; plus the camera button, also on the right, is difficult to use.
Nokia x7
On the left is the SIM slot, the cover of which we found impossible to remove, and a microSD card slot which we were able to get at.
The microSD card itself sits in a little holder that pops out of the chassis. You slide the card out of the holder if you want to hotswap. It's a faff and we'd have much preferred a simple hinged cover with a standard slotting mechanism.
Turning to the front, the 4-inch AMOLED touchscreen dominates. Under it there's a lozenge-shaped physical button that opens the apps menu. We like the minimalist approach.
Nokia x7
The large screen means a large handset – at 119.7mm x 72.8mm x 119mm you'll have trouble reaching right across it if your hands are small.
As a piece the Nokia X7 is a solid-feeling, interesting-looking smartphone with a metal backplate that helps it retain a sturdy frame that should take plenty of knocks.
Nokia x7
